What it is
An MCP server implementation for retrieving information from the AWS Knowledge Base using the Bedrock Agent Runtime. It provides RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) by returning context from a Knowledge Base based on a query and a Knowledge Base ID. It exposes one tool, retrieve_from_aws_kb, with an optional parameter for the number of results. The repository is in the servers-archived project.
Who it's for
- Developers who want an MCP client such as Claude Desktop or VS Code to query an AWS Knowledge Base
- Teams already using AWS Bedrock Knowledge Bases who need RAG context for an assistant
Requirements
Requirements
- AWS access key ID, secret access key, and region
- AWS credentials with appropriate permissions for Bedrock Agent Runtime operations
- An AWS Knowledge Base ID to query
- Either Docker or npx to run the server
Setup
Set up AWS credentials
Obtain AWS access key ID, secret access key, and region from the AWS Management Console. Ensure these credentials have appropriate permissions for Bedrock Agent Runtime operations.
Configure Claude Desktop with npx
Add this to your claude_desktop_config.json, replacing the placeholder values with your AWS credentials and region.
json{ "mcpServers": { "aws-kb-retrieval": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-aws-kb-retrieval"], "env": { "AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID": "YOUR_ACCESS_KEY_HERE", "AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY": "YOUR_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY_HERE", "AWS_REGION": "YOUR_AWS_REGION_HERE" } } } }Configure Claude Desktop with Docker
Alternatively, run the server via Docker by adding this to claude_desktop_config.json.
json{ "mcpServers": { "aws-kb-retrieval": { "command": "docker", "args": [ "run", "-i", "--rm", "-e", "AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID", "-e", "AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY", "-e", "AWS_REGION", "mcp/aws-kb-retrieval-server" ], "env": { "AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID": "YOUR_ACCESS_KEY_HERE", "AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY": "YOUR_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY_HERE", "AWS_REGION": "YOUR_AWS_REGION_HERE" } } } }Build the Docker image (optional)
To build the image locally with Docker, run this command.
shdocker build -t mcp/aws-kb-retrieval -f src/aws-kb-retrieval-server/Dockerfile .
Examples
VS Code manual installation (npx)
json{
"mcp": {
"inputs": [
{
"type": "promptString",
"id": "aws_access_key",
"description": "AWS Access Key ID",
"password": true
},
{
"type": "promptString",
"id": "aws_secret_key",
"description": "AWS Secret Access Key",
"password": true
},
{
"type": "promptString",
"id": "aws_region",
"description": "AWS Region"
}
],
"servers": {
"aws-kb-retrieval": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-aws-kb-retrieval"],
"env": {
"AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID": "${input:aws_access_key}",
"AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY": "${input:aws_secret_key}",
"AWS_REGION": "${input:aws_region}"
}
}
}
}
}What it does: Add to User Settings (JSON) in VS Code. AWS credentials are prompted via inputs, with the access key and secret key marked as password fields.
VS Code workspace sharing
Prompt.vscode/mcp.jsonExpected output: The source says you can add the configuration to this workspace file to share it with others; in that file the mcp key is not needed.
VS Code manual installation (Docker)

"AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY": "${input:aws_secret_key}",
"AWS_REGION": "${input:aws_region}"

}
}What it does: Runs the server through Docker in VS Code using the same prompted credential inputs.
Pros & cons
Pros
- Pro:Single focused tool (retrieve_from_aws_kb) for RAG retrieval from an AWS Knowledge Base
- Pro:Configurable number of results via the optional
nparameter (default 3) - Pro:Documented configs for Claude Desktop and VS Code, with both npx and Docker options
- Pro:MIT licensed
Cons
- Con:Lives in the servers-archived repository, indicating it is no longer in the active servers repo
- Con:Requires supplying AWS access keys and secret keys in the configuration env
- Con:Only exposes retrieval; no other tools are documented
