1. Evaluate before you clone
On our GitHub Trending page check stars, last push date, license and language. Open the repo and skim open issues.
2. Read the README install section
Most projects use one of: pip install, npm install, docker compose up, or uv.
3. Isolate it
Use a Python virtual environment, a Docker container, or a separate machine. Never paste API keys into files you will commit.
4. Run the smallest example first
Find the “quick start” or examples/ folder and run it unchanged before customizing.
5. Keep it updated
git pull regularly and re-read the changelog for breaking changes.
